Permanent Museum
Where sunlight falls, light shifts, and art and architecture move with nature.
Emme is a new museum in Bali uniting nature, art, and architecture, with educational programs, a restaurant, a library, and other facilities, creating a cycle of support for society. Shaped by hopes shared by people from many places with deep ties to Asia and Indonesia, Emme carries the once-fallow farmland—at the foot of a UNESCO World Heritage Site, near Tanah Lot Temple and Canggu—into the future. Part of the proceeds, in turn, supports environmental and educational initiatives.
Threading between existing trees and following the sun’s movement, the museum’s spaces grow like a plant. Across its 1 ha site, visitors encounter permanent artworks, including a golden waterfall, waves of light, and a space within the clouds—each changing with the daylight.Operated by

Story
01. Museum
Emme invited two creators whose work had already deeply moved us, both Asia-based and internationally active: Andra Matin (architecture) and Eugene Kangawa / EUGENE STUDIO (artworks in the museum and spatial concept).

May the wonder and hope we once felt through their artworks and the architecture reach future generations, and may this experience—artworks, architecture, and environment as one—circulate through society.

Currently in an invitation-only pilot phase for surrounding communities. Sign up here for public opening updates and more news. Images of museum spaces will be unveiled in stages.
02. Workshop: For Family
A hands-on program designed to deepen your experience of art at Emme. Through encounters with materials and the creative process, it invites you to nurture your senses and creativity. Join us as a family or on your own. Details of “Little Creators,” are coming soon.
03. Atelier / Library
Located beside the main museum, the Atelier / Institute offers a quiet, unhurried setting in which to experience the creative process and philosophy behind the museum and its works as a whole, and to explore that thinking in greater depth. More details coming soon.
04. Dining
Local and sustainable approaches to food are central to the world Emme seeks to create. More details coming soon.

Architect and Artist

To carry this place into the future, Emme invited two creators whose work had already deeply moved us, both Asia-based and internationally active: Andra Matin (architecture) and Eugene Kangawa / EUGENE STUDIO (artworks presented in the museum and spatial concept).

May the wonder and hope we once felt through the artworks and architecture reach future generations, and may you experience how the artworks, architecture, and environment come together as one.
Museum Story
Andra Matin
Architect
Andra Matin works with materials that live in concert with nature, shaping architecture that weathers gracefully over time. He treats changes in materials and the surrounding environment as part of architecture, and his practice encompasses projects of varying scales and uses, including private residences, museums, mosques, and public swimming pools. His work ranges from homes closely attuned to individual lives to cultural, religious, and public spaces where many people gather. In Bali, he has designed numerous buildings, including Potato Head. Andra Matin has received multiple architectural awards.
Comment

“The architecture and the artworks interact organically and have come to embody the traditions, culture, and spirit of Bali. Like the works, my architecture is grounded in a deep respect for nature. The architectural team and the artist have worked together, with great technical sensitivity, to create the space and the experience.

I hope this museum will become an important destination in Indonesia for experiencing high-quality contemporary art and architecture. I hope people from Indonesia and around the world will come and experience it.

Bali has a traditional spatial organization of dwellings known as the Natah System. Community takes shape around a central shared space for rest and gathering. Emme, too, will be a place where architecture, nature, artworks, and visitors coexist. Drawing on this system, we have made extensive use of materials and techniques from the region, including terracotta.

Throughout this undertaking, works rooted in a deep respect for nature are delicately interwoven with people’s lives and nature itself. The whole contains important elements that connect to cosmology.”

Eugene Kangawa
Artist
Eugene Kangawa (EUGENE STUDIO) is an artist whose practice centers on abstract paintings and spaces addressing time, existence, and history. Through these works, he has considered from multiple perspectives the strength to live and the nature of human existence within an ever-changing world. One of the origins of Emme’s conception lies in a visit by the community behind the museum to his large-scale solo exhibition The New Sea, as well as to his atelier. The works on view at the exhibition, and seeing how they moved many visitors, left an impression on them. The museum’s collection includes works from series also presented in that exhibition. In addition to museum exhibitions, his moving-image works have received awards and nominations at international film festivals.
Comment

“I am deeply honored to be able to contribute to society in this way. At the same time, I hope that this museum will become something dedicated to the wider community and to future generations.

It was a great pleasure to visit Indonesia and spend time with friends there. A project such as this naturally depends on the generous support of many people; it is something I could never have imagined achieving alone. I would like to express my gratitude once again.

The remarkable architecture by Andra and the team of craftspeople is also nearing completion. The museum’s official name has now been decided, and we, too, look forward to the day it opens to the public. I hope visitors will experience both the works and the architecture, and that this place will also become a platform.”

Careers & Operations

Please review our current openings and contact us here. A member of our Museum Operations Team will respond to your inquiry.

About Museum Operations: Emme is jointly operated by Yayasan Emmerald for Earth—a public foundation based in Bali, Indonesia—and PT Desa Emme Rald. A portion of the museum’s proceeds supports environmental initiatives and educational programs. Emme’s activities extend beyond specialist work in art and architecture, and we welcome applications from people with a wide range of skills and backgrounds.
For Careers: Where is Emme located, and how did it first take shape in Bali?
Bali is a place with which we have long-standing ties and for which we hold deep respect. The project gradually took shape through encounters with a landscape of long-fallow rice fields, wonderful people, and creators whose work we deeply admire.

The museum is situated on a gentle hill, where the sound of the sea can be heard in the distance.

During the pilot phase, the exact address has not yet been made public for safety reasons. We appreciate your understanding.
Visitor Essentials
What facilities are available at Emme?
Emme is a museum where nature, art, and architecture come together. At its heart is a permanent collection. It also works with respected pioneers in such efforts, including Nuanu Creative City, while gradually exploring and co-developing joint programs with environmental initiatives and educational organizations in the region.
